“犯旺”一词，在当今各八字流派中应用的并不普及。此词流行的年代，据在下所知，可以上溯到元明清。但近代由于“犯旺”一词的不确定性及不易把握（即：过于抽象，实战操作中的可控性不强），故渐渐地淡出。
一般而言，言“犯旺”，其内涵总是离不开“强”与“弱”的力量之对比，而且是悬殊的力量差异，由此引伸出来，所谓“犯旺”就是“以弱犯强”，或“以弱敌强”，故而称之为“犯旺”。
“强”与“弱”，在概念上是说得通的，还可以作为一个“术语”，但在实际操作中却难以把握。比如，“弱”是“弱”到什么程度才算是“弱”？“强”又是“强”到什么程度才算是“强”？正是由于此，“犯旺”一词便淡出于流行的八字术语之中。
